Peggy Guggenheim was born in 1898 in New York from rich family, she lived touring the world and bought works everywhere, mainly between America and Europe. Venice was a great love for her, as were the great artists of the time. She married the painter Laurence Vial, she Began attending bohemian salons, falls for Holms, she frequented Tanguy, Breton, Beckett, Duchamp, she married Marx Ernest. She shared her days and often her homes with Kandinskji, Man Ray, Brancusi, Cocteau, Moore, Arps.
She support many artists, that she bought for long periods from to the comfort of her bed. When she was forty years opened her first gallery in London, exhibited for the first time Kandinskji, Tanguy and many artists of the European avant-garde. With Duchamp and Beckett she followed the road that led then to be one of the most influential women of her time. She was a patron of the arts, not only collector. She bought Brancusi, Arp, Picasso, Braque, Moore, Mondrian, Dali, Leger, Picabia. Her collection include the cubism, surrealism and expressionism.
She was forced to abandon being Europe, because jewess, but she will return after the war. Saves her collections trying to ship them in safe places. In America, in 1942, she will open the gallery “Art of This Century” by making a bridge between the European and American art.
